CPA vs CMA: Choosing Between the Two Accounting Credentials

The CPA and CMA (Certified Management Accountant) both certify accounting expertise, but they point toward different roles. Here’s the distinction.

What each is for

CPA centers on public accounting, audit, tax, and financial reporting, and carries legal authority as a license.

CMA centers on management accounting and corporate finance — budgeting, performance management, cost analysis, and strategic financial decision-making inside organizations.

Format and time

  • CPA: four sections (three Core + one Discipline), 150-hour education requirement, and experience. See the CPA exam guide.
  • CMA: two parts, generally a faster path than the CPA, with its own education and experience requirements.

Which should you choose?

  • Want to work in public accounting, audit, or tax, or keep the broadest options open? The CPA.
  • Set on a corporate / management accounting career and want a faster path? The CMA.
  • Some professionals hold both; the CPA is the more universally recognized of the two.
